You Design: Game of Death

In 1972, production began on what would become Bruce Lee’s final film. The making of Game of Death was disrupted by the unfortunate death of Bruce Lee, but not before over 100 minutes of spectacular martial arts action were filmed. In today’s You Design, we pay our respects to the martial arts master with one of his greatest fight scenes: the confrontation between Lee and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

In large part, this scene is iconic simply because of the extreme size difference between its fighters. The action is accompanied by what we now view as stereotypical martial arts sounds—vocalizations on every hit and over-the-top swinging and punching sounds.

With his updated pass in Audio Design Desk, Jared included the classic sounds we’ve come to love but added tons more. By giving it the fresh music and sound design it deserves, even the lulls in the fight garner anxiety. Jared finished his sound pass off with loads of extra foley, from footsteps and clothing to the sounds of the environment crumbling around them.

Today, we want to encourage you to easily create your own pass of this classic—and hopefully inspire future generations to create their own martial arts masterpieces.
